An explosion outside the American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, has left one person dead and at least five others injured. Authorities are investigating the incident as an intentional act of violence. The blast occurred just before 11 a.m. on North Indian Canyon Drive near East Tachevah Drive, causing extensive damage to nearby buildings, including a medical office building associated with Desert Regional Medical Center.
Incident Details
Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills stated, "The blast appears to be an intentional act of violence and the blast field extends for blocks with several buildings damaged—some severely." The identity of the deceased has not been released. Investigators believe the explosion originated from a vehicle parked near the clinic.
Dr. Maher Abdallah, head of the American Reproductive Centers, confirmed that no staff members were harmed and that the clinic's laboratory, including all eggs, embryos, and reproductive materials, remains secure and undamaged. He added, "Our mission has always been to help build families... In the face of this tragedy, we remain committed to creating hope."
Response and Investigation
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are assisting local authorities in the investigation. FBI assets deployed include investigators, bomb technicians, and an evidence response team. U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stated, "We are aware of the explosion that occurred this morning in Palm Springs. FBI is on scene and will be investigating whether this was an intentional act."
California Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the situation and emphasized that the state is working closely with local and federal authorities. He urged residents to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
Community Impact
Desert Regional Medical Center reported that while some windows were broken in a medical office building directly facing the explosion, hospital operations have not been affected. The emergency department remains open, but visitors are temporarily asked to refrain from coming to the hospital due to limited access on the road in front of the campus.
Residents are advised to stay away from the area to allow emergency crews to work. If any potential evidence is found, it should be left in place, and authorities should be contacted at the Palm Springs Police Department's non-emergency number: (760) 327-1441.
This is a developing story. More details will be provided as they become available.
