Kelce Comes Back for One More Run — And the Paycheck Isn’t Small
Just when the football world was preparing to say goodbye, Travis Kelce decided he isn’t quite finished yet.
In a surprise twist that has fans in Kansas City cheering and NFL analysts scrambling to update their retirement predictions, the legendary tight end has reportedly told the Kansas City Chiefs he wants to return for a 14th NFL season. After months of speculation that the future Hall of Famer might walk away from the game, Kelce appears ready to lace up the cleats once more — and he’ll be doing it in familiar red and gold.
According to several reports across U.S. sports media, Kelce is expected to sign a one-year deal worth around $15 million, giving the Chiefs another season with one of the most recognizable and charismatic players in football. Not bad for a “one more time around the block” season.
The news comes after what many observers considered a down year by Kelce’s elite standards. The 36-year-old tight end finished the season with 76 receptions on 108 targets for 851 yards, numbers that still look impressive for most players — but were Kelce’s lowest in more than a decade.
Kansas City’s season also ended in disappointment, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014. When the Chiefs lost to Denver in Week 17, fans inside Arrowhead Stadium gave Kelce a long-standing ovation, a moment many believed was a farewell to one of the franchise’s greatest stars.
Even Kelce himself seemed uncertain about his future. On the popular “New Heights” podcast, which he co-hosts with his brother and former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, the tight end had been careful not to reveal any clear plans.
But behind the scenes, the Chiefs never lost hope.
Team owner Clark Hunt made it clear earlier this year that Kansas City would gladly welcome Kelce back.
“As an organization, of course, we hope he returns,” Hunt said. “He had another great season. Maybe not quite at the level of four or five years ago, but he still had over 800 yards and was one of the leaders in our offense.”
Kelce will turn 37 in October, an age when many NFL players are already enjoying retirement golf and television deals. But the veteran tight end reportedly has one more goal in mind — a fourth Super Bowl title.
And then there’s the pop-culture side of the story. Kelce’s high-profile relationship with global music superstar Taylor Swift has turned the Chiefs star into an international celebrity well beyond the football field. Cameras now follow him from stadium tunnels to concert VIP sections, making him one of the most talked-about athletes in the world.
Still, at heart, Kelce remains a football player.
Drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, Kelce has spent his entire career with the franchise, becoming one of the most productive tight ends in league history and a cornerstone of the Chiefs’ modern dynasty.
Now, instead of a farewell tour, Kansas City fans get at least one more season of No. 87.
Retirement will have to wait. For Travis Kelce, the story isn’t over just yet.
