PSP to Break Ground on $93.6 Million Baggage Handling System
For travelers passing through Palm Springs International Airport, the experience has long felt refreshingly distinct from the congested, sterile corridors of traditional aviation hubs. With its open-air courtyard, mid-century modernist architecture, and panoramic views of the San Jacinto Mountains, PSP has cultivated a reputation as a breezy, stress-free gateway that mirrors the relaxed hospitality of the Coachella Valley. Yet behind that leisurely facade, an invisible operational engine has struggled to keep pace with the region's explosive popularity. On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, airport and civic leaders will gather to break ground on a $93.6 million outbound baggage handling system—a critical modernization project that will discreetly safeguard the effortless travel experience that defines the Palm Springs destination.
To understand why an airport would dedicate nearly a hundred million dollars to back-of-house conveyor tracks and automated screening equipment, one needs only examine the unprecedented passenger surges in recent years. Recognized nationally as one of the fastest-growing airports in the country, PSP added nonstop routes and welcomed record crowds, but that success quickly collided with outdated baggage infrastructure. During peak holiday seasons, the airport's previous setup became a bottleneck. The resulting congestion forced ticket-counter backups, compelled the city to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for personnel to manually push luggage across the apron, and led officials to warn leisure passengers to arrive two full hours early—a galling friction point for a boutique resort airport whose brand relies on curb-to-gate ease.
The new system will nearly triple baggage processing capacity, increasing from approximately 440 to 1,300 bags per hour. During peak periods, demand can reach 920 bags per hour, more than double the current system's capacity. The project also includes approximately 10,000 square feet of additional space, modern screening technology, and improvements to operational reliability and employee working conditions.
The new outbound baggage handling system solves that dilemma through an advanced, fully automated inline screening facility engineered to support passenger demand over the next fifteen years. Checked bags will glide seamlessly from airline ticket counters through cutting-edge explosive-detection technology that meets the latest Transportation Security Administration standards. By automating bag sorting and eliminating manual transfer points, the system dramatically increases processing throughput, sharpens sorting accuracy, and accelerates baggage handoffs to airline ramp crews. For travelers, that means shorter ticket-lobby lines, swift check-ins, and the reliable assurance that golf clubs, luggage, and carry-ons will reach the cargo hold on time.
The project is equally notable for its fiscal stewardship. Rather than tapping the Palm Springs municipal general fund or asking local Coachella Valley taxpayers to shoulder the expense, the $93.6 million investment is financed primarily through external and self-generated sources. Over 70 percent of the budget—more than $66.5 million—comes from federal funding, anchored by the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Infrastructure Grant program, TSA contributions, and a $3 million congressional earmark. The remaining balance is covered by $14.4 million in Passenger Facility Charge revenue and $12.6 million in airport operating reserves, ensuring that the visitors utilizing the facility pay for its upkeep.
As construction ramps up toward a projected completion in late 2028, airport leadership, under Interim Director of Aviation Victoria Carpenter, is ensuring that current baggage operations continue without disruption as part of the wider capital improvement campaign. Luggage systems rarely make it into travel brochures, but they form the foundation on which first and last impressions are built. By transforming a long-standing choke point into a modern, high-capacity marvel, Palm Springs is reinforcing its commitment to seamless travel, ensuring that the desert getaway begins and ends with total peace of mind.
