Two National Guard Soldiers Critically Wounded in Targeted Shooting Near the White House; Trump Orders 500 More Troops to D.C.
Washington — Two members of the West Virginia National Guard were critically wounded Wednesday in what authorities are calling a “targeted shooting” just two blocks from the White House, prompting a wave of reinforcements and a full-scale response across the capital.

Rescuers attempt to save one of the soldiers.
The attack occurred near the Farragut West metro area around 2:15 p.m., when a lone gunman reportedly “came around the corner” and opened fire on the soldiers during a high-visibility patrol. The suspect — identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national — was wounded in the ensuing exchange and taken into custody.

Here, the suspected shooter, who is seriously injured, is being loaded into an ambulance.
Both Guardsmen were rushed to local hospitals and remain in critical condition. Officials described the incident as a deliberate act of violence, calling it a “brazen act” targeting military personnel.
In response, Donald Trump ordered the deployment of an additional 500 National Guard troops to Washington, joining an existing force already stationed in the city. Federal and local agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have taken over the investigation.
The shooting triggered a brief lockdown of the White House, halted flights into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and intensified national debate over the presence and role of Guard troops in U.S. cities.
Further details remain under investigation as authorities work to determine the shooter’s motive and whether any additional threats remain.
