Who Turned Up the Volume in Our Desert Sky?
Something’s different in the skies above Desert Hot Springs. You’ve probably heard it — quite literally. Our serene desert town, where the loudest sound used to be the wind sighing through palm fronds or the occasional pool filter grumbling at dawn, now has a new member in its desert orchestra: airplanes—lots of them.
Every morning, as I float in the pool pretending the wind is a personal spa soundtrack, a jet passes overhead — sometimes two. They glide right above like clockwork, just as I’m trying to have a moment of transcendental peace. For years, Desert Hot Springs had the kind of silence that made even birds speak softly. Now, it feels like we’re hosting daily rehearsals for Top Gun: The Spa Edition.
Neighbors have started to notice, too. Mindy insists it’s a new shortcut to Las Vegas. My friend Javier swears it’s Elon Musk testing invisible air taxis. I, on the other hand, suspect it’s Palm Springs International Airport quietly adjusting its flight paths while we’re all busy perfecting our tan lines.
Of course, we’re still lucky — the winds here are strong enough to drown out just about anything. But there’s something oddly funny about watching a jet slice across our tranquil blue sky, reminding us that even peace and quiet need to file a flight plan these days.
So if you find yourself looking up during your morning swim, wondering why the clouds are roaring — you’re not alone. Our desert might be famous for its healing waters, but lately, it seems we’ve also become the latest scenic route to the stratosphere.
