AFAF GALA EVENT — Lee Greenwood
Story and Photos by Pat Krause
The AFAF, American Friends of our Armed Forces, held its 21st Annual Salute to Our Troops fundraiser on the 14th at Toscana Country Club. The Gold Classic followed on the 15th, pairing servicemen with players in a meaningful day on the course.

This annual event honors our Southern California Marines and Sailors, raising funds to support programs for military members and their families. This year carried special significance as the nation approaches its 250th birthday. To mark the occasion, country music legend Lee Greenwood performed an intimate private concert.

The evening began after a hosted bar and a fabulous dinner. A Marine, Martinez, delivered a heartfelt National Anthem. The audience was reminded of the presence of the family of Hunter Lopez, who gave his life for our country, and 25 Marines in attendance. Sgt. Maj. John M. Cain spoke about his 22 years of service and what AFAF means to military families. Wearing a jacket filled with medals, he spoke with pride, noting that the Marines of 29 Palms are always ready, their demanding training shaping strong, dedicated men.

A moving video followed, sharing stories of Marines and Sailors whose lives were touched by AFAF’s generosity. One spoke of needing surgery overseas and how AFAF stepped in to care for his family. Others shared gratitude for being welcomed into local homes during the holidays, finding comfort and a sense of belonging when far from home.

AFAF supports service members at 29 Palms, Camp Pendleton, and Miramar through emotional support, enrichment programs, and emergency medical assistance. Their year-round efforts include baby showers, holiday gifts, youth sports, and spaces where servicemen can relax with games and pools. The evening featured three live auction items, along with a spirited “raise your paddle” fundraiser supporting more than 100 programs. A sweet surprise came when two cakes by Judy Van Benthuysen each sold for $2,400.

The highlight of the night arrived when Lee Greenwood stepped onto a small stage with his five-member band, performing up close for a few hundred guests. He spoke openly about his life and career, sharing stories as if among friends. Moving between piano and saxophone, he performed several songs, including one never recorded and even his first hit.
As the evening came to a close, the room rose to its feet for his signature song, “God Bless the U.S.A.” Hands went over hearts, voices joined softly, and for a moment, the room felt united in gratitude, pride, and quiet reflection.
