Coco Crashes Out: Gauff Stunned in Wimbledon First-Round Firestorm

LONDON — In a jaw-dropping opening round at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, No. 2 seed Coco Gauff was sent packing Tuesday by Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, 7-6(3), 6-1, in what many are calling the tournament’s first true shocker.

Gauff, the reigning French Open champion and two-time Grand Slam winner, looked out of rhythm from the start on Court No. 1. Her usually reliable forehand lacked bite, and her serve—normally a weapon—betrayed her with nine double faults. Yastremska, the world No. 42, stayed cool, firing 16 winners to Gauff’s six and handling the tiebreak with precision.

On match point, Yastremska ripped a forehand so deep it drew a final error from Gauff, prompting a triumphant scream from the Ukrainian and a stunned silence from the crowd. Gauff, 21, gathered her rackets quickly and offered a brief wave to fans before exiting.

“I don’t really like losing,” Gauff admitted through tears in her post-match press conference. “I felt like I could have been a little bit better… mentally I was a little bit overwhelmed with everything that came afterwards” following her Roland Garros triumph.

The loss marks Gauff’s second opening-round Wimbledon exit in three years and continues her struggle to advance past the fourth round at the All England Club.

For Yastremska, it was the biggest win of her career. “I was really on fire. I even have fire on my nails,” she grinned, flashing red flames on her fingertips. “These courts are made for the greatest players… I hope that the road will continue for me here.”

With Jessica Pegula also falling early, it’s the first time in Open Era history that two of the top three women’s seeds have lost in the first round of a major.
