Purple Reign Hits Broadway

NEW YORK — Broadway is about to turn a spectacular shade of purple.

Prince’s electrifying world of music, romance and rock-star rebellion is officially heading to the Great White Way. Purple Rain will begin preview performances March 12, 2027, at New York City’s historic Majestic Theatre, with opening night scheduled for April 12.

Tickets are expected to go on sale through Telecharge in September 2026. Casting — including the performer facing the monumental task of becoming “The Kid” — will be announced later.

The musical will unleash more than 20 Prince classics, including “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Take Me with U” and “The Beautiful Ones.” And yes, audiences can reasonably expect the title song to turn the Majestic into one enormous, emotional singalong.

But this is more than a greatest-hits concert wearing Broadway clothes. Based on Prince’s Grammy-winning album and Oscar-winning movie, the show follows The Kid, a fiercely talented young musician battling family turmoil, romantic complications and ruthless competition in the Minneapolis music scene.

Prince made his leading-man debut when the movie opened July 27, 1984. Its explosive blend of music, drama, fashion and unapologetic star power transformed him from a major recording artist into a global phenomenon.

The original film earned approximately $68 million during its initial domestic run and was selected for the National Film Registry in 2019 because of its cultural, historical and artistic importance.

The accompanying soundtrack became an even bigger sensation. It spent 24 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 and won two Grammy Awards, including honors for its score and rock performance.

Tony-nominated director Saheem Ali will guide the Broadway production, working from a new book by Dogfight writer Peter Duchan. Emmy-winning choreographer Ebony Williams will create the movement, while Tony winner Jason Michael Webb will oversee music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations.

Longtime Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes are joining the production as music advisers, giving the show a direct connection to musicians who helped shape Prince’s unmistakable sound.

The biggest mystery is now the cast. Whoever steps into the purple spotlight will not simply be playing a role. That performer will be carrying one of pop culture’s most fiercely protected legacies.

No pressure.

But when those first guitar notes hit the Majestic, Broadway may party like it is 1984 all over again.
