Desert Hot Springs Kids Shine in S.T.A.R.S. Program—Building Strength, Confidence, and Joy

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. – In a city that celebrates heart, hope, and hometown pride, a remarkable youth program is giving local children a reason to leap even higher. The S.T.A.R.S. program—short for Specializing in Tumbling, Acrobatic-Gymnastics, Rhythmic-Gymnastics, and Stunts for Cheer—has become one of Desert Hot Springs’ brightest success stories, blending fitness, fun, and affordability into one powerful mission.

Now in its fourth year, S.T.A.R.S. offers children from ages four and up a chance to explore the exciting world of modern gymnastics through small, high-quality classes that focus on individual growth. It’s one of 58 teams across Southern California to offer continuous $50 grants, reducing tuition to just $12.50 to $15 per hour—training rates not seen since the 1990s. That rare affordability keeps the program accessible to working families while maintaining professional coaching standards.

Students are divided by age—4 to 6, 7 to 10, and 11 and older—with an average ratio of ten gymnasts per coach. This intimate setting allows experienced instructors to track progress, customize lessons, and create a safe environment where young athletes can flourish.

Unlike traditional artistic gymnastics programs, S.T.A.R.S. introduces participants to a variety of disciplines including acrobatic-gymnastics, cheer-gymnastics, rhythmic routines, trampoline work, and even baton twirling. Each class emphasizes flexibility, balance, teamwork, and self-esteem—skills that extend well beyond the mat.

“Every flip builds more than muscles,” says one longtime coach. “It builds confidence. Kids start to believe in what they can do.”
